Let's Ride Pop Up
Last Sunday 8th April Ant and I headed over to
the Brownlee Centre (Boddington Playing Fields) to help out at the Let’s Ride
Pop Up event. Let’s Ride is a two-hour, family orientated, free cycling event
held in Leeds twice a month. It is run by volunteers on behalf of HSBC and
British Cycling. Families come along and are able to practise cycling on the 1
mile track. It is open to all ages and abilities. If you don’t have your own
bike that’s not a problem, you can borrow one at the track for free! This makes
the session accessible for everybody. There is also a children’s area in which
younger children and less competent cyclists can get to grips with their bikes.
We had a fantastic session on Sunday, Ant, Harry (a particularly good helper) and I were on reception,
signing people in and sending them off to the track. It was great to see
children and parents excited to rack up a few miles on their bikes.
In the second hour when the arrivals were quietening down, Ant
and I were able to have a go ourselves. However, for some reason we were
persuaded not to borrow a normal bicycle, oh no that would be too easy. We had
a go at the hand bikes. Hand bikes are powered by your arms and you steer with
your feet, simple in theory, in practise it’s actually rather difficult!
Especially going uphill. My fellow Leeds Girls Can ambassador, Breeze Ride
leader and friend Kirsty gave me a cheeky push to get me going (don’t tell Ant – he had
to do all the hard work himself!). Then we decided that we would have a go on a
tandem. A tandem is a bicycle built for two people. It was hilarious trying to coordinate
our pedalling to power up the hill and then trying to keep steady zooming down.
We had a really fun afternoon and I would recommend giving
it a go if you live in the Leeds area! You can find out more information and

your tandem partner is good at steering…
